Please inform yourself well in advance about entry and residence conditions and, if applicable, visa requirements at the representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in your home country.
Please note that it is generally not possible to extend your residence permit in Germany if you are entering the country as a tourist (without a visa) or with a Schengen visa. If you are planning a longer stay, you must apply for a national visa (D visa). (Only a few countries – e.g. USA, Japan, South Korea – have simpler regulations.)
If you are planning to study in Germany after your language course, you should include this in your visa application.
For the visa application, you will need, among other things, the final confirmation from the Goethe-Institut that your course has been fully paid for (this confirmation corresponds to the "invitation" required by the embassy), as well as confirmation of health and accident insurance valid in Germany. Further information on insurance can be found in our insurance information.
If your health insurance is not valid in Germany, we strongly advise you to take out international health insurance for the duration of your stay.
We will be happy to help you with this.
Based on our positive experience, we recommend our long-standing insurance partner of the Goethe-Institut:
The insurance package for €1.40 per day gives you insurance coverage from the time you enter Germany for your entire stay at the Goethe-Institut and is tailored to the legal requirements in Germany. The insurance does not cover any costs for pre-existing conditions and follow-up treatment.
