Goethe-Institut Sudan in Cairo is offering a unique opportunity for 12 aspiring and amateur Sudanese photographers to spend a week of learning, knowledge, and training with German trainer Andrea Lützen in Cairo. This workshop is aimed at photographers from Sudan and residing in Cairo.
Workshop Features
The workshop provides participants with the space to learn, discover, and follow up with the trainer, practice and refine their skills, and interact with people, spaces, places and the ability to capture the feeling.
About the Facilitator
André Lützen, is a German photographer with a focus on personal documentary photography. His work in Sudan began in 2013, where he facilitated various photography workshops over the course of three years and in 2016 he curated the Mugran Photo Festival in Khartoum. His latest book “Khartoum – A Tale of Three Cities” (2023) encompasses life in a habitat with extreme climates.
Lützen’s work received numerous awards, appeared in several books and has been exhibited at the Haus der Photographie/Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the New York Photo Festival, Photo Espana, among others. He studied Visual Communication at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg and the International Center of Photography New York and regularly works as a lecturer for the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the Haus der Photographie and the Goethe-Institut.
Alongside Sudanese photographer Ala Kheir, they started and curated the “Postcards from Khartoum” photo series, which is a contribution of images and captions by 24 Sudanese photographers, giving an insight on their lives and the happenings in Sudan, due to the on-going conflict which began on April 15th, 2023.
Workshop Details
- Duration: September 9, 2024 to September 17, 2024 – Full day participation
- Place: Goethe-Institut Kairo, 13 Hussein Wassef Street, Dokki, Cairo
- Language: The workshop will be conducted in English
- Transport: The selected participants are responsible for their own travel expenses
Selection Criteria
- Amateur and semi-professional Sudanese photographers residing in Cairo
- Innovative and compelling artistic practice and previous photography models
- Ability to work and communicate well in English
- Desire and commitment to learn and practice as well as being committed to attend the full workshop program
- Have a camera and/ or a good mobile camera is key for participation
