Ruth and her best friend Viktor grow up in a rural area in East Germany blighted by lignite mining. They know all too well what violence is. Ruth’s father, the village pastor, and her mother are far too busy with arguments and fisticuffs to notice what grandpa is doing to their daughter. Or do they not want to see it? Ruth finds some peace in playing the violin, Viktor shaves his head and lets everything bounce off him.
