Workshops
As a German teacher abroad, how can I continue my training independently? How do I determine my training needs? These are the questions that will be discussed in this workshop. Based on these questions, we will explore the various options available to us.
Conducted by Seralathan Pannirselvam

How high is your energy level? Would you like to recharge your batteries? Do you want to energise your lessons? Then please use energisers in your lessons! What are energisers? What role do they play in the classroom? Why energisers? You will find answers to these questions in the workshop.
A person's attention span is a maximum of 20 minutes. After that, the brain usually switches off! That's why these energisers are so important. These small, playful units stimulate attention, increase concentration and develop class dynamics. They encourage movement and creativity in the classroom. What's more, not only can they be incorporated into lessons without much preparation, but they also help to make lessons varied and dynamic. Energisers create a relaxed and informal atmosphere and help to overcome fear of speaking and inhibitions.

In a world where AI can provide countless pieces of information, write, translate and even correct texts within seconds, the question arises as to how we can ‘reload’ our teaching so that it remains effective and relevant.
What will be the key ‘human’ skill in the future that will lead us and our learners to success? Without question: EI - Emotional Intelligence. EI is not only a significant part of our everyday lives, but according to research, it is also an evident aspect of success in professional life and higher social recognition.
What exactly is EI? How can I use and teach it in the classroom to prepare learners for the target language country?
Why are intra- and interpersonal aspects, understanding learning and leadership emotions (e.g. enjoyment of learning, hope of success in exams) and constructive conflict analysis essential in foreign language teaching?
Let's go down the path of ‘human intelligence’ together using examples from the textbook ‘Prima aktiv’ (Cornelsen).

The use of digital tools in German as a foreign language (DaF) lessons opens up new didactic possibilities that can make learning more interactive and effective. As a teacher, you should always be on the lookout for new ways to make face-to-face and online lessons more interesting. The use of various apps in the classroom is not a new topic. In this article, four specific, newer apps are presented and their potential in DaF-lessons is examined: Learning Snacks, Edu Pad, Edkimo and Simple My Show.
Learning Snacks offers an easy way to deliver learning content in the form of interactive chatbots, which encourages learners to actively participate and self-monitor.
Edu Pad enables collaborative work in real time and supports the promotion of writing skills through digital whiteboards, which is particularly beneficial in group work.
Edkimo serves as a feedback tool and helps teachers to better understand learners' needs and opinions through surveys and feedback.
Simple My Show allows learners to create their own presentations or explanatory videos, which encourages their creativity and gives them an active role in the learning process.
This workshop examines the possible applications of these tools in DaF-lessons and discusses their advantages and disadvantages in terms of promoting language competence, motivating learners and supporting the teaching process.

This workshop focuses on classroom activities that demonstrate how linking language and body movement through creative activities is a fundamental learning strategy. Children demonstrate through physical responses that they understand and process the meaning of words or structures.
During the workshop, the methodological procedure ‘Total Physical Response’ (TPR) will be presented, demonstrating that motor skills and language acquisition can be combined well in early DaF-lessons. Creative and playful activities are used to show how children first have to touch and move the things around them in order to gain information and knowledge. This also means learning with all the senses in the classroom, because such activities are of great importance for cognitive processes and lead to a pleasant and effective learning experience.

Evaluation is an important part of language teaching, whether for beginners or advanced learners. Various interactive, digital and creative teaching and learning methods have found their place in contemporary Daf-lessons. When it comes to evaluation, however, traditional evaluation methods such as written tests and oral examinations are in the foreground.
This workshop will focus on how creative and digital methods can also be used for evaluation during lessons. In addition to the theoretical part, this workshop will show how evaluation can take place in a way that motivates learners instead of the usual ways.
Afterwards, the participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and check the applicability of the options presented in the workshop.

The main aim of successful foreign language teaching is to apply what has been learnt in authentic situations. But when teaching the foreign language or in our case German abroad (for example in India), it can be difficult to create authentic speaking situations for the learners. A simple and creative solution to this is the use of various websites. These are a good source for teaching topics related to the country and can also be used to review a lot of the content learnt in class, such as grammar and vocabulary. Not forgetting the sense of achievement after successfully engaging with authentic materials, which is invaluable for learning success.
The workshop introduces various websites and their diverse applications in German lessons. These websites can be used in both offline and online courses. The workshop will also cover the advantages and disadvantages of digital media in the classroom as well as media skills and the demands placed on teachers.
In the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to actively work with the websites themselves and create new tasks in mutual discussion.
The workshop will focus primarily on beginner levels, but will also cover some topics for advanced learners of German.

Germany, at the heart of Europe, attracts workers from all over the world, including India. To be successful in professional life, solid language skills are indispensable. In addition to the general language, specialised language skills are required, as well as the ability to express oneself in writing and orally in a manner appropriate to the situation and taking local customs into account.
Indian professionals have been working in Germany for many years, especially in fields such as medicine and nursing, and their numbers are growing every year. What can they expect in their new working environment in Germany? How should they prepare? How can everyday working life run as smoothly as possible?
In this workshop, you will get to know the textbooks from Hueber Verlag that answer precisely these questions. You will gain insights into the working world of doctors and nurses and get a taste of their specialised language. You can use these textbooks to prepare your learners specifically for their work in Germany.

Nowadays, digital media have become an integral part of teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the exploration and implementation of these diverse digital tools. At the same time, dealing with heterogeneity, especially in the language classroom, remains an ongoing challenge. Although learners in India often share similar cultural backgrounds, there are significant differences in learning styles and performance.
This paper explores the potential of digital tools to bridge these differences in performance and promote individualised teaching. It aims to develop strategies that make it possible to organise lessons in such a way that they offer a variety of content and methodological learning paths for each participant. Special attention is paid to the individuality of learners.
Through the targeted use of digital media, individual learning paths can be supported more effectively, learner motivation can be increased and the learning process can be organised more flexibly. It is emphasised that the focus should not be on the tools themselves, but on the pedagogical intention to respond to the specific needs of individual learners.
The workshop will present selected digital tools that have proven to be particularly effective in designing differentiated lessons for heterogeneous groups. These tools open up new possibilities for an interactive and inclusive learning environment in which learners can actively participate in lesson design. Although the initial implementation of these methods may require additional preparation time, it promises more efficient and effective teaching practice in the long term. This approach not only promotes individual learning progress, but also prepares students for the increasingly digitalised world of education and work.

Foreign language didactics has been noticeably affected by the consequences of the corona pandemic. The new digital technologies are therefore given a special place in the process of teaching and learning and are very widespread in today's foreign language lessons. Learners are very familiar with the new media. Foreign language learning should therefore adapt to the new digital lifestyle. Media such as podcasts can also be used successfully in foreign language teaching. As part of Web 2.0, podcasts have become increasingly popular in recent years. Podcasts are new media that are widely available today and offer a wide range of different topics that are relevant in DaF-lessons. Numerous podcasts suitable for different language levels are produced for foreign language learning.
This workshop will attempt to demonstrate the didactic possibilities, relevance and advantages of podcasts over traditional listening texts. Not only learners but also teachers can benefit from podcasts. The sensible use of audio podcasts can motivate learners and effectively support German learning.

In a constantly changing educational landscape, it is becoming increasingly important for German teachers to prepare their pupils and students for an increasingly dynamic professional world. But how can we creatively and effectively integrate the topics of career guidance, communication and soft skills into German lessons?
This interactive workshop is aimed at teachers at all levels of education who want to redesign their lessons and enrich them with practical, digital and creative methods. Together, we will explore innovative approaches to integrating job-specific topics, preparing for technical language and promoting important soft skills such as teamwork and conflict resolution.
In this workshop, we will first look at how job-specific topics - from technical language to job application training - can be integrated into German lessons in a creative and motivating way. The concept of pre-integration plays a central role here: we will show how learners can be familiarised with the linguistic and cultural requirements of the world of work at an early stage in order to facilitate their transition into training and employment. We discuss practical methods that are tailored to both school and university contexts and jointly develop teaching units that are tailored to the requirements of different professional fields. A particular focus is on promoting professional communication skills and soft skills through innovative digital tools and interactive formats.
You will learn how to prepare learners with different levels of prior knowledge for starting a career, how to encourage their own initiative and how to make learning more fun at the same time. Let's rethink German lessons together - practical, motivating and future-orientated!
Join us and bring a breath of fresh air into your lessons!
Due to time constraints, we may concentrate on the most important core topics in order to provide you with practical and realisable methods for teaching German.
