An exhibition on techno music initiated by Goethe-Institut, curated by Mathilde Weh, Justin Hoffmann, Creamcake and presented in Kolkata by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata in collaboration with TRI.

As a global phenomenon, techno has not only shaped the history of music but has also had a significant influence on culture. Techno's impulses impact on the various fields of art, pop culture, media consumption and technologies. Techno is thus an attitude towards life as well, that reflects particular social, living-environment and economic structures and can also serve as a political medium.

In Germany, techno acted as a connecting element between East and West and gained particular importance after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In particular Berlin, which attracted attention in the 1990s with the Love Parade, developed into one of the most prominent capitals of techno music.

The exhibition delves into the rich thematic intersections of art, music, technology, and culture. By showcasing works that navigate between local and global narratives, as well as the realms of underground and mainstream, the exhibition offers attendees a unique perspective on the evolving landscape of techno. The approach is interdisciplinary and inclusive, aiming to attract a diverse audience. The research modules are divided according to themes that are interrelated and linked by design and acoustic elements. They are conceived in a trans-boundary context, so that individual topics impact on the other surrounding areas. Historical works are shown alongside contemporary commentaries.

In the past, various access barriers and discriminatory structures have meant that the techno scene has remained largely exclusive, especially for women, and reflection on prevailing gender relations is still in its infancy in the field of electronic music. Intersectional, queer and de-colonial practices and approaches occupies important positions in the exhibition.
