About the Project:

This project is funded under the Franco-German Cooperation Fund and realised through a partnership between the Institut Français/Embassy of France in Yemen and the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with “Menkam”, a Yemeni initiative led by female cultural activist Firyal Majdi.

This project brings together young female creative practitioners and researchers from different parts of Yemen, using oral history methodology to document female artist biographies that are told in their own words. The methodology of Oral History and the focus on oral recordings of women’s voice is particularly appropriate, as women in Yemen tend to not feel safe with visual recordings and often prefer to remain anonymous. The podcast format creates a safe space for women to talk, thereby overcoming the cultural restrictions that would make it otherwise hard for them to speak out.

Furthermore, the fact that the interviews will be conducted by Yemeni women themselves creates an atmosphere of trust and ensures that the sensitivities of the context, especially when it comes to women’s realities in Yemen, are taken into consideration.

Participants will undergo a week-long training, which includes archiving and documenting oral history and marketing oral history, as well as podcast production training. After the training, participants will start tracking the stories of female artists in their provinces and archiving and recording their stories through the podcast.
