In exchange with the world. For diversity, understanding and trust.

The Goethe-Institut in Japan promotes international cultural exchange. Our projects are created in partnership and close cooperation with cultural institutions, cultural initiatives, and artists from Japan, Germany, and worldwide. They invite an open, trusting dialog, joint artistic production, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.

Cultural Fundings

Translation funding

We want to make it easier for an international audience to access contemporary German-language literature, non-fiction and books for children and young people. Since its foundation 50 years ago, our funding programme has financially supported the publication of around 7,000 books in 45 languages.

Arts funding and residencies

The Goethe-Institut promotes art and culture in a variety of projects in Germany and abroad. You can search by genre, funding type and duration.

Theatre Library

The funding and translation of works of new German drama into other languages has been an essential part of the activities of Goethe Institutes worldwide for many years. These translations are made available by the Theatre Library.
