A Summer’s End is a narrative fiction set in 1980s Hong Kong. The game follows the day to day life of a young office worker named Michelle Cheung, and shows how a chance meeting with Sam Wong, a free spirited entrepreneur, profoundly impacts her regimented life. The player must help Michelle navigate the dilemma of her developing relationship with Sam and the conflict between her individual desires and her sense of traditional propriety. Michelle’s story is about identity and self-determination in an era of rapid change. A Summer’s End aims to portray this unique time period in Hong Kong with authenticity and humanity. The change in societal attitudes towards the role of women in the workplace and family, as well as societal perceptions of LGBTQ identity and expression during this time is discussed in the storytelling. A Summer’s End is a romance and an homage to Asian cinema and Hong Kong 1980s pop culture.
