Sounds of Inuicity - A Work in Eternal Progress

SOUNDS OF INUICITY is a dream sequence on forms of life and identity in a format with the following point of departure: The emergence of Greenland as a nation is connected to specific conceptualizations of Greenlandic national identity. The criteria of territory, language, ethnicity, indigeneity, tradition, and values are perceived to constitute ‘Greenlandic forms of life’. Greenlandic national identity as a concept has emerged along with the historical processes in which a global system of nation-states has been founded. The concept of the nation is not natural or primordial but a more or less conscious construction which is closely connected to the needs of the territorial state. In the context of Greenland, the Inuit people have acquired the state as an institutional artefact of colonialism, and the concept of a Greenlandic nation was transferred to the local Inuit populations by Denmark. Through these historical developments, the Greenlandic community has come to share the characteristics of what defines a nation.
A music-theatrical performance between contemporary music and renaissance will emerge: music, text, language, and voice will merge into a utopian-synesthetic moment of conviction and overpowering. We are starting the expedition to Greenland and back and take the plunge into the search for Utopia.
