Alexander Kluge

(born 14.02.1932 in Halberstadt), filmmaker, author, screenwriter

After studying law, history and ecclesiastical music, Alexander Kluge initially worked as a lawyer, but soon began to engage in literary activities. He is the author and director of numerous films and is one of the most important representatives of "New German Cinema". He has also written many standard works on film analysis. He has also written short stories and was first invited to meetings of "Gruppe 47" in 1962. A collection of his existing literary work was published in 2000 under the title Chronik der Gefühle (i.e. chronicle of feelings). Two further collections followed: Die Lücke, die der Teufel läßt in 2003 (The Devil's Blind Spot, trans. by Martin Chalmers and Michael Hulse, New Directions) and Tür an Tür mit einem anderen Leben (i.e. door to door with another life) in 2006. Alexander Kluge has received numerous awards, including the Georg Büchner Prize 2003, the Heinrich Heine Prize 2014 and the Jean Paul Prize 2017. He lives in Munich.
